Generally, Japanese cedar lives for about 500 years, but Yakusugi lives longer than 1000 years. Among Yakusugi, there are also Yakusugi that are 5000 to 7000 years old, although there are
differences depending on the theory. The environment of Yakushima, where Yakusugi is located, has a lot of rainfall and low soil nutrients, so trees grow slowly and accumulate a large amount of
resin. Resin protects wood from disease and rot. As a result, these trees tend to have a long life.
Since logging of Yakusugi has been banned for more than 20 years, Yakusugi has a high rarity value and its price continues to rise.
I painted this work with German vegetable oil, which is harmless to the human body, and finished with American orange oil. With these tasks, Yakusugi can breathe.
